A Nutritional Powerhouse

Haskap berries have long been known to the ancient Japanese as “The fruit of Life, Longevity and Fruit of Vision” and are used as a traditional remedy for disease in China, Japan and Northern Russia. They are now being recognized by Western Science as a nutritional powerhouse. Researchers around the world are currently working to describe and quantify the extent of the benefits the berry provides.

With its diverse profile of health benefits, Haskap is set to become a major player in the growing “Super Berry” industry. Expect Haskap berries and berry products to go the way of goji berries and acai. Haskap has all the characteristics of another significant trend in health food.

As more people make the decision to incorporate health promoting berries into their diets, demand for berries will continue to increase.

The berries are in a class of their own in terms of antioxidant content, with three times as many cancer and heart disease-fighting antioxidants as blueberries. In particular, the berries have high levels of the antioxidants Anthocyanins, Polyphenols and Bioflavanoids.

Haskap berry has a potential to use as an effective functional food or dietary supplement to control inflammation.

Chronic inflammation is known to contribute to the risk of developing metabolic disorders such as cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, diabetes and various cancers.

Studies have shown that Haskap berry polyphenols have the potential to act as an effective inflammation inhibitor. Haskap berries have also been used in folk medicine to reduce blood pressure and relieve gastrointestinal disorders.

Researchers at Dalhousie University are exploring the claim that Haskap berries have an ability to ward off cancer.

One serving (100g) of Haskap berries packs the equivalent vitamin C as an entire orange. They are also high in vitamin A, fibre and potassium as well as antioxidants (3X that of blueberries).
